Inside the covers of Celebrating the Sistas, the reader will be inspired by the stories of African American Women and Women of Color from the community who are making a difference in the fields of education, politics, business, health, and social services. This biography series is building a written legacy for the children, while celebrating the strength, determination, care, success, power, and beauty of each Sista. Every child should have the opportunity to learn about the outstanding contributions of these Sistas!
March 3, 2018, was proclaimed Celebrating the Sistas Day by City of Saint Paul Mayor, Melvin Carter, and City of Minneapolis Mayor, Jacob Frey. This was the date of the 10th Annual Celebrating the Sistas Community Leadership Recognition Awards. Also, on this date, Keynote Speaker, Dr. Josie R. Johnson gave attendees a call to action that inspired this children’s book series idea. Not everyone has the opportunity to attend the Celebrating the Sistas events, but everyone, especially the children, should know about these Sistas!
With the children in mind, both Mary Taris, founder of Strive Publishing, and Kevin Johnson, founder of the Celebrating the Sistas Community Leadership Recognition Awards, are committed to this collaborative effort to continuously uplift and record the biographies of past recipients of the Celebrating the Sistas Community Leadership Recognition Award. With this biography series, we are building a written legacy for the children. Moreover, each contributor’s story will teach, inspire, and empower children to reach for their dreams. We are grateful for the first ten contributors for bringing positive energy, support, power, and beauty to Celebrating the Sistas: Book 1 in the Series of 21st Century Heroines Every Child Should Know.
